Curriculum

Curriculum

We want our children to be happy, engaged, motivated and to enjoy their learning.

We offer a curriculum which is broad and balanced and which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children, whatever their starting points, as they progress through each Key Stage. The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of The National Curriculum, Core Stories and other challenging experiences and opportunities which best meet the learning and developmental needs of the pupils in our school.

children reading

Our Reception children follow the Revised Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. Reading is taught using a rigorous approach to synthetic phonics and this supports the development of essential writing skills.

We follow the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) programme.

Our curriculum also includes the promotion of The Arts and a strong eco awareness and Forest Schools. Music teachers come in to our schools to provide instrument teaching.

ICT is used to enhance teaching and curriculum provision. The children use ipads and laptops in all curriculum areas and we provide discreet lessons to teach computing skills. We also have computing clubs throughout the year.

We tailor our curriculum to suit the needs of the children and promote learning about our rural heritage and Norfolk through stories, visits and visitors. In order to promote aspiration in our children we develop opportunities to learn about British values, national culture and diversity. We also include themes that will teach children about countries and cultures from around the world and have developed links with countries such as India and Malawi.

We have a wide range of after school clubs that are provided throughout the year and host holiday clubs through outside providers.

Children are given many opportunities to participate in a wide range of sporting activities at local and county level in addition to their PE lessons every week. We frequently promote Healthy School activities.

Our school is committed to developing the whole person and we believe opportunities to develop values and attitudes are as important as the development of skills and knowledge. Spiritual, moral, social emotional and cultural development is emphasised in all aspects of school life.

Parents and members of the community are continually encouraged to come into school to assist in the delivery of the curriculum through hearing readers, by sharing a skill or by simply supporting the teacher on a school visit.

The aim of our curriculum is for pupils to have the requisite skills and knowledge to be successful, independent and motivated learners in readiness for their next stage of education and employment in the future.

Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is based on four key aspects:

  • To explicitly teach the emotional literacy and social skills needed to make our school a happy and thriving place.
  • To give our children the knowledge and skills they need to understand their place in the world and be able to move to the next stage of their learning journey.
  • To promote a love of reading through exposure to high quality texts and excellent reading instruction.
  • To provide children with excellent teaching from skilled practitioners.

Curriculum Drivers

These will be driven by the following ideas:

  • Relevance – We aim to make our learning relevant in terms of what has gone before and what will come next in our curriculum. We aim
  • Curiosity - We aim to spark a love of learning in our children and inspire them for the future.
  • Knowledge - We aim to provide a curriculum which is rich in the knowledge our children need.
  • Fluency - We aim for our children to be fluent readers, speakers and have quick recall of the taught knowledge from our curriculum.
