English and Reading
We want our pupils to learn to read and write quickly and well. We want them to hear wonderful stories and read rich information texts.
Phonics
We teach phonics using the DfE validated “ELS” scheme. Find out more here:
Essential Letters and Sounds - Oxford Owl
Once children have become proficient in phonics, we teach reading to build fluency through targeted fluency lessons in Year 2. As the children progress through Key Stage 2 the texts children encounter increase in complexity to ensure they build the reading miles and vocabulary knowledge they need to be successful readers. We encourage reading for pleasure, use our school library and read a range of high-quality texts to our classes.
Writing
We follow the “Ready Steady Write” scheme for writing. This has a clear progression of grammar knowledge and skills and writing outcomes which build on each other through the teaching sequence.
We teach handwriting through the Nelson scheme. We teach this in timetabled lessons, and reinforce good letter formation in our daily phonics and spelling sessions.
Our spelling programme for Y2 and above follows directly on from ELS phonics and follows a progression through the year covering the National Curriculum Appendix 1.
